GRISO Summer School 2026 – A Collaborative Future: Strengthening Science and Connections in Greenland

The Greenland Ice Sheet Ocean Science (GRISO) network will host the fifth GRISO Summer School in Nuuk, Greenland during May 18-29, 2026. The topic is A Collaborative Future: Strengthening Science and Connections in Greenland.

Summer School Goals

The GRISO Summer School emphasizes both Greenland-focused science and building collaboration, communication, and complex problem solving skills across disciplines and outside of research institutions. At the summer school, participants will:

  • Meet and learn from science-connected people and organizations in Greenland.
  • Learn about the state of science and techniques pertaining to Greenland coasts, ice sheet, ocean, communities, and ecosystems within the theme of A Collaborative Future: Strengthening Science & Connections in Greenland.
  • Develop skills in cross-discipline collaboration and communication to explore cutting edge system science topics.
  • Build and strengthen research community connections, and especially a healthy and strong early career network.

Applications will close on January 21, 2026 at 11:59pm EST. 


Applications will be evaluated by the GRISO summer school organizers, and applicants will be admitted with the aim of having a diverse and interdisciplinary group of students. Participants will be notified of acceptance via email by roughly February 11, 2026.

Target Participants

The 2026 summer school is anticipated to accommodate 12 students. The primary audience for the summer school is advanced PhD students and early postdocs. We encourage applications from Greenland-based students as well as US domestic and international students.

Summer school participants will have the opportunity to participate in boat and field trips and hiking, as well as other outdoor activities, however arrangements will be available for people with limited mobility. Accommodation will be at the Inuk Hostels, with sharing of gender-matched 2-bed rooms in 8-bed cabins (note that these are close accommodations without substantial personal space).

Key Topics and Activities

The GRISO Summer School will include a variety of activities.

Science areas that may be covered include:

  • Glaciology at Greenland ice sheet margins
  • Glacial hydrology
  • Fjord and ocean circulation and hydrography
  • Trends in Greenland marine ecosystems
  • Community response and opportunities from coastal change
  • Modeling ice, fjord, and ocean processes
  • Recent ice sheet retreat and drivers of change
  • Human adaptation and response to climate change
  • Links across climate, human behavior, and well-being

Professional and personal development activities include:

  • Focused development activities developed in partnership with Knowinnovation (covering ~5 course days)
  • Creative problem solving and design thinking
  • Collaborating across multi-disciplinary and diverse groups
  • Leadership skills for multi-disciplinary groups

Outings and additional activities are likely to include:

  • Engagement with local experts, researchers, and institutions
  • Field trip (potentially by boat)
  • Some hands-on training with field instrumentation
  • Hiking opportunities

Costs

All of the local expenses will be covered by the GRISO project, including accommodation, food, and field trips. Participants are expected to arrange and pay for their own travel to and from Nuuk. 

A limited number of travel stipends are available. Please specify in the application if your participation is dependent on receiving travel support.
